I bought one of these in about 1989 and immediately sporterized (bubbaized) it. I specifically remember that it was advertised as chambered in .308 Win, but 7.62 CETME is actually correct. Thing shot surprisingly well and after I had the barrel turned down and put it in a plastic stock, it only weighed about 5.5 lbs less scope. Problem was, factory 308 rounds were often very sticky, requiring the use of the butt of the hand to get the bolt open. I ended up loading some lower pressure rounds using a Lee Loader (my first handloading endeavor) and took a whitetail with it, but sold it off (with full disclosure and warning) after I got a little older and wiser and learned about bolt setback. I'm not especially afraid of the small ring Mauser action, it's just that alot of the Spaniards were just too soft, IMO. I respectfully disagree with Ribbonstone, as I believe the Spanish '93 will experience lug failure sooner than the average '96 or '98. If you must shoot it, heed the previous warnings and load up some low-pressure rounds. I would especially avoid the Silver Bear, as my experience with them in .223 indicated they were loaded hotter than other factory rounds I've tried. |
